What is DVI?
(Digital Video Interface)
DVI (Digital Video Interface) is an interface for the digital and analogue transmission of video data. It is regarded as the digital successor to the S-VGA standard and has established itself over many years alongside HDMI as a connection between computers and monitors.
The success of the DVI standard in the computer sector is primarily due to two factors: simple handling and good image quality. DVI is designed for hot plugging. The term refers to the ability to connect and disconnect components during operation. This advantage is of particular benefit to laptop users who operate their device on the move and with changing monitors or projectors.
DVI also scores over analogue interfaces such as VGA in terms of image quality. The reason is simple: the digital output signal does not have to be converted into an analogue signal for transmission. As a result, the image data remains digital and therefore unaltered across the entire signal chain. DVI is also able to process analogue signals for the benefit of universal compatibility. For example, VGA-capable monitors can be operated on the DVI interface using appropriate adapters. Compatibility is also one of the greatest advantages of DVI in another respect: the interface can be operated in a compatible manner with HDMI and is therefore ideally suited to connecting a computer or notebook to a television if the two devices have different interfaces.
Future prospects for DVI In the field of consumer electronics, the industry has been focussing primarily on the continuous further development of HDMI for many years. For the connection of computers and monitors, DisplayPort has been on the rise for several years. As with the HDMI cable, there is basic compatibility with DVI via adapters. Thanks to the higher bandwidth, DisplayPort cables can reproduce higher resolutions with better quality to the benefit of the user. Further development of this standard can therefore be expected in the future.
DVI-D
DVI-D (Digital) & DVI-I (Integrated) DVI-D only transmits digital video data, while DVI-I can reproduce both digital and analogue signals. Both categories differentiate in digital operation between a single-channel (single-link) and a dual-channel (dual-link) version. Single-link is suitable for resolutions up to approx. 1600 x 1200 pixels at 75 hertz. Dual-link is more powerful and is therefore used for higher resolution formats.
DVI-A
DVI-A (analogue) DVI-A only transmits analogue video data. In practice, DVI-A is only used with adapter cables for VGA. Unlike DVI-D and DVI-I, there are no different connector types for DVI-A. This difference is due to the fact that only certain pins are required for the various functions of the different DVI variants, each of which fulfils a fixed function. A connection with more functions therefore has more pins.
