What is HDMI?

High Definition Multimedia Interface

The HDMI digital interface is specifically designed for use in the consumer electronics sector. It transmits audio and video data and has its own copy protection.

Special advantages of HDMI cables

Excellent picture quality
HDMI cables transmit video data without loss. Thanks to the high transmission rate of up to 48 GBit/s for version 2.1, the signal does not need to be compressed for the transfer. HDMI supports high-resolution image standards such as 8K, 4K and HDTV.
Audio and video capable
An HDMI connection is a video and audio cable in one. This makes it possible to transmit one video and up to 32 audio signals simultaneously through the same cable, for example when operating a games console on a television.
Installation and operation
HDMI also offers significant advantages during installation. Thanks to its low susceptibility to interference, the standard masters cable lengths of up to 20 metres without any noticeable loss of quality; for version 2.1, the cable lengths are slightly shorter due to the higher final speed.CEC and AV-Link support also make operation easier: components connected to each other via HDMI can be controlled with one and the same remote control.
HDMI cable with different connector types
HDMI cables are available with different connector types that allow for a variety of uses. The regular sizes are used, for example, to connect projectors and receivers, while smaller versions can be used to connect smartphones, for example, to larger screens. Details on the individual types can be found further down on this page.

Compatibility with DVI and DisplayPort

Compatibility with DVI

HDMI is younger than DVI and therefore downwards compatible - with one restriction: Many DVI devices are not designed for the HDCP coding standard, which was first developed with HDMI. They are not suitable for a connection with HDMI. For all other cases, InLine® supplies exactly the right cable for adapting between the two interfaces.

Compatibility with DisplayPort

The DisplayPort connection standard is even newer than HDMI. Users of Apple devices in particular are familiar with the Mini DisplayPort and are often dependent on suitable adapters for the use of HDMI devices. InLine® also offers suitable adapters for these purposes, providing you with a perfect connection to HDMI.

Versions and specifications

The latest technical versions of HDMI cables have been 3D TV-compatible since version 1.3. 1.4 also supports ARC (Audio Return Channel) and 4K2K resolution. The ‘return path for sound information’ (ARC) eliminates the need for additional S/PDIF cables. 4K2K is the successor to the HDTV picture formats 720p and 1080i/p. With around 4 times the HDTV resolution, it is being developed not only for the home entertainment sector but also for educational and medical facilities.
With the introduction of version 2.1, the latest HDMI cables now also support the latest 8K standard as well as the playback of 4K films at up to 120 frames per second. The playback of audio signals has also been improved.

HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC)

Since version 1.4, the so-called HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC for short) has been integrated into the HDMI standard. As the name suggests, HEC is an Ethernet channel in the HDMI cable. It is used to network network-capable devices with each other and connect them to the internet. This means that only one device needs to be connected to the router. HEC has a capacity of up to 100 Mbit/s in both directions and supports all IP-capable entertainment devices such as televisions, games consoles or receivers.

Plug types of HDMI cables

The most common connectors in the consumer sector are A, C and D. Connector type B is a further development of A and is used in the professional sector. Plug type E is used exclusively in the automotive industry and is particularly shock-resistant.

Type A
The standard HDMI connector, common from the first HDMI version 1.0, is still the most widely used on the consumer market.

Special types of HDMI cables

Special challenges require special HDMI cables. With special right-angle connectors and cables with signal amplifiers from InLine®, you can transport your HDMI signal in the highest quality through narrow environments or over long distances. With a high-quality InLine® extender, you can achieve extensions of up to 30 metres in HDTV resolution. Wireless HDMI Wireless HDMI (WHDMI) is a technology for wireless use of the HDMI standard. It transmits high-resolution videos up to 1080p and can be operated via WLAN, UWB or in the 60 GHz band as a point-to-point connection.

Distribution of HDMI signals

HDMI distributors utilise four different transmission principles when splitting signals:

  1. HDMI splitters route a source signal to several receivers. They work without any loss of quality. HDMI splitters are used at large events, for example, to show a film on several LCD walls at the same time.
  2. Several source signals are connected to an HDMI switch, one of which is forwarded to a receiver. One application example is a television with only one HDMI connection. The switch can be used to connect a games console, a set-top box and a Blu-ray player, for example, and activate them at the touch of a button.
  3. The HDMI switch/splitter picks up several source signals, multiplies a selected one and forwards it to several monitors. The device thus combines the functions of simple switches and splitters. This technology makes work much easier in conference calls or training scenarios.
  4. the HDMI matrix extends the functional principle of the switch/splitter. It gives the user complete freedom in the distribution of signals. Different sources are available simultaneously on different output devices. For example, the LED TV can show a Blu-ray disc while simultaneously routing the signal from the games console to the projector
