What is Quick Charge?

An introduction to Qualcomm's fast charging technology

Quick Charge (often abbreviated as QC) is a fast charging technology developed by Qualcomm to shorten the charging time of devices such as smartphones, tablets and other devices with compatible batteries.

A Quick Charge-compatible charging port can flexibly adjust the voltage and current. Depending on the charge status of your device, the technology automatically regulates the required charging power.

This means, for example: If your smartphone battery is almost empty, the Quick Charge charger supplies more power to charge the battery quickly. As soon as the battery is almost fully charged, the charging power is gradually reduced to protect the battery and prevent overheating.

This offers two decisive advantages: Firstly, your device is charged significantly faster, and secondly, the technology reliably protects it from overheating. Conventional chargers limit their maximum output to prevent excessive heating.

Quick Charge, on the other hand, dynamically adapts the charging power to the requirements of your device. This effectively prevents overheating while ensuring a high charging speed. This combination of speed and safety makes Quick Charge a particularly efficient and gentle charging solution for your devices.

Features of Quick Charge

Faster charging time: devices can be significantly charged in a short time (e.g. 50 % in 15-30 minutes, depending on the version).
Backwards compatibility: Quick Charge chargers also work with devices that do not support this technology, but charge them at normal speed.
Several versions: There are different Quick Charge versions (e.g. QC 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0), with each version offering improvements in charging speed and efficiency.
- QC 3.0: Dynamic voltage regulation for better energy efficiency.
- QC 4.0/4.0+: Support for USB-C and USB Power Delivery.
- QC 5.0: Extremely fast charging (up to 100 W), suitable for larger devices such as laptops.

Requirements for Quick Charge:

To use Quick Charge, you need a compatible device that supports Quick Charge technology. It is also important to use a charger that is equipped with Quick Charge and a high-quality USB cable to optimise the transfer of charging power.
