What is SAS?

SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) is an advanced technology for connecting hard drives and other storage devices.

It works in a similar way to the widely used SATA interface, but offers some advantages, in particular faster data transfer. In the first version of SAS, data transfers reached a speed of up to 3 Gb/s. With the next version, SAS 2, the speed was doubled to 6 Gb/s, and with SAS 3 (or SAS 12G) even 12 Gb/s is possible.

Advantages of SAS

SAS supports several communication protocols that enable the exchange of data between devices. One example is the Serial Management Protocol (SMP), which ensures that hard disks can communicate directly with each other. Thanks to this technology, up to 16,384 devices can be connected via a single port.

Another advantage of SAS is that it supports both SAS and SATA hard drives, which means you can use different types of hard drives on the same controller to optimise flexibility and cost. SAS also offers greater reliability and scalability compared to older technologies.

How SAS works

Die Technologie arbeitet im sogenannten Duplex-Betrieb, was bedeutet, dass Daten gleichzeitig gesendet und empfangen werden können. Es werden die gleichen Steckverbinder wie bei SATA verwendet, aber SAS bietet zusätzliche Funktionen, wie zwei Ports pro Festplatte, was eine redundante Architektur und damit mehr Sicherheit ermöglicht.

SAS-Kabel können interne Verbindungen von bis zu 1 Meter und externe Verbindungen von bis zu 10 Metern unterstützen, was es auch einfach macht, externe Geräte anzuschließen. Über einen sogenannten Expander können bis zu 128 Geräte miteinander verbunden werden, wodurch sich eine äußerst flexible und erweiterbare Speicherlösung ergibt.
