aptX is an audio codec that enables high-quality, wireless sound transmission via Bluetooth with low latency.

In modern transmission technology, the trend is increasingly moving towards wireless solutions. The transmission of data via WLAN has long been part of everyday life. However, Bluetooth is also increasingly becoming the new standard for audio playback. The classic AUX or jack connection on smartphones is now a rarity. As a result, either headphones equipped with Bluetooth connection technology or models with USB-C are required for mobile music enjoyment.

Consumers are also increasingly turning to Bluetooth to operate their home stereo systems. As a result, the demands on the technology and transmission quality are becoming ever greater. A lot has changed in the Bluetooth standard since the end of the 1990s. In 1999, data rates of just 0.732 Mbit per second were possible, but with version 5.0, data rates of up to two Mbit per second are now possible. With the aptx codec, a wireless music experience can be delivered in combination with Bluetooth that can easily compete with wired systems.

How does aptX work?

aptX is a codec, i.e. a pair of algorithms, for encoding and decoding audio signals. The codec is already around 30 years old and was originally used at the time of the ISDN connection to improve the voice quality of telephone calls. In the field of wireless transmission of music and other audio sources, aptX is now enjoying a great deal of attention again. The codec compresses an audio signal for transmission and ensures almost lossless decompression.

What are the advantages in detail?

The aptX codec is used by well-known manufacturers for high-quality smartphones, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, headphones, tablets and in the areas of home entertainment, car hi-fi and multi-room speakers. aptX improves wireless sound quality and enables constant, interference-free music enjoyment. Only devices that meet the highest quality requirements are authorised by the manufacturer Qualcomm to use the aptX logo.

The aptX codec provides you with high-quality music playback in stereo via a wide range of playback devices. The technology supports digital audio signals with 48 kilohertz and 16bit LPCM. This puts the standard at a similar level to CDs. Thanks to configurable equalisers, different types of music are output in the same quality and no distortion is produced even at high levels.

With aptX, latencies of less than 130 milliseconds can be realised during transmission. With the further development aptX Low Latency, this is even limited to a maximum of 40 milliseconds. With older Bluetooth standards, there can be significant delays in transmission from the transmitter to the receiver. As a result, sound transmissions on your television, for example, are now reliably lip-synchronised.
