Cat.7 patch cables – A common misconception

Many products are marketed as ‘Cat.7 patch cables’. In fact, the ISO/IEC 11801 standard does not define any RJ45 patch cables as Category 7. Instead, other categories are used for RJ45-based patch cables. InLine® labels its products transparently and in accordance with the standard, so that you can clearly understand their technical specifications.

The shielding of a network cable protects data transmission from electromagnetic interference. The most suitable type depends on the installation environment.

Conductor material – copper, CCA or CCS?

Not every network cable has the same conductor structure.

Copper (Cu)

Copper offers excellent electrical properties and is particularly suitable for professional networks and Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications.

CCA

Copper-clad aluminium combines an aluminium core with a copper coating and offers a cost-effective alternative for less demanding applications.

CCS

Copper-clad steel has a steel core with a copper coating and is used for specific applications.


A comparison of sheath materials

The cable sheath also determines the type of environment for which a network cable is suitable.


PVC

The standard choice for many office installations.

LSZH

Low-halogen and low-smoke. LSZH cables are particularly suitable for public buildings and areas with heightened fire safety requirements.

PUR

Highly resistant to oil, abrasion and mechanical stress. Ideal for industrial environments.

TPE

Particularly flexible and suitable for applications involving movement.


Cable types – The right design for every application

Network cables are available in various designs depending on the area of application. Choosing the right design makes installation easier and helps ensure neat cable routing.

Round cables

Round cables are the classic choice for network installations. They are highly robust and are suitable for use in offices, server racks and industrial environments.

Slim cables

Slim cables have a smaller outer diameter than standard patch cables. As a result, they take up less space, improve air circulation in the network cabinet and make cable management easier in environments with high port density.

Flat cables

Flat cables are particularly suitable for discreet installation, for example under carpets or along skirting boards. Thanks to their flat design, they can be laid in a space-saving manner.


Power over Ethernet (PoE) – data and power via a single cable

Many network cables are not only suitable for data transmission, but also for supplying power to compatible devices via Power over Ethernet (PoE). 

For example, IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points or VoIP telephones can be supplied with both data and power via the same network cable.

Depending on the application, various PoE standards are used, including:

  • PoE (IEEE 802.3af)
  • PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at)
  • PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt)

What is the difference between patch cables and installation cables?

Patch cables connect network devices directly and already have RJ45 connectors. Installation cables are permanently installed and connected to network sockets or patch panels.

When should I use a shielded network cable?

What does S/FTP mean?
